An injection-molded plastic kit of a Soviet armored personnel carrier in 1:48 scale, the Mikromir part number 48-012 from the Ukrainian maker. A scale of 1:48 is unusual for armored equipment; it suits anyone building a uniform display case with aircraft, or anyone who wants a vehicle for an aviation diorama. According to the manufacturer the package holds decals for two finishes: the Finnish Army and the Polish Land Forces.
The BTR-60 was the first Soviet armored personnel carrier on eight wheels and was fully amphibious, so it crossed stretches of water under its own power. The PB version made it into a finished weapon: it received a covered hull and a small conical BPU-1 turret with a KPVT machine gun of 14.5 millimeter caliber and a coaxial PKT of 7.62 millimeter caliber, with a supply of five hundred rounds. Propulsion was provided by a pair of six-cylinder GAZ-49B gasoline engines of ninety horsepower each - a reserve in case of a breakdown, but a complication for the crew and for maintenance alike. The PB was the definitive form of the type and was built from 1966 to 1976; so many came about that they serve to this day.
The order is crucial on an armored vehicle. Finish and paint the running gear and the inside of the hull before you close the hull up - afterward you will not reach them. Set the eight wheels on a flat surface and check that all of them stand before the glue hardens. After spraying comes the weathering: flowing washes into the engraved lines and around the rivets, then dust and mud pigments from the bottom upward. Apply the decals onto a gloss intermediate coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
