A cast accessory from the Czech manufacturer Plusmodel in 1:48 scale. It is a boarding ladder for the Convair F-106 Delta Dart fighter. A ladder standing at the cockpit is one of those small things that turn a model into a scene: it explains why the canopy is open and gives the composition a vertical element for a figure to lean on.
The Convair F-106 Delta Dart was an American Cold War interceptor with a delta wing and no horizontal tail. It was designed for a fast climb and an interception against bombers and stayed in service remarkably long. The cockpit sat high above the ground, so there was no reaching it without a ladder brought up to it.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and glue them with cyanoacrylate. Assemble the ladder on a flat surface so that it stands square and does not rock. Paint it a metallic shade or a warning color to suit the scene, sand the edges of the steps back to bare metal and work a dark wash into the joints. Dirty the bottom of the legs with pigment, otherwise the ladder will look as if it were floating.
