A set of pre-cut self-adhesive masks for the model of the British version of the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II in 1:48 scale. The manufacturer, the British brand Airfix, lists the set as masks for the Phantom FG.1. It is an accessory; the airplane kit is not included in the box.
British Phantoms differed substantially from the American ones: instead of the original engines they received the more powerful Rolls-Royce Spey, which called for a redesign of the rear fuselage and of the air intakes. The Royal Navy flew them as the FG.1 from the decks of aircraft carriers, while the Royal Air Force used both the FG.1 and the FGR.2 fighter-bomber. The machine has a massive two-piece canopy and a number of smaller glazed areas, so masking takes a lot of time.
Degrease the glazing and let it dry, press the mask down around its whole edge and fill the inside of the cockpit with modeling putty or tissue. Apply the paint in thin coats, otherwise a ridge forms at the edge of the mask. Pull the mask off sideways with tweezers as soon as the surface becomes tacky; once the paint has cured completely, the edge breaks and flakes away.
The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
