About product

A beaver-tail roof tile in 1:48 scale

The beaver-tail is a classic fired clay tile with a rounded lower edge, which gave the roofing its name. In central Europe it covered the roofs of town houses, farms and outbuildings throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and it is still found on the historic cores of towns today. This accessory is not a model of a building but a structural element for a diorama with which you build a roof, a part of one or its ruins yourself.

Field of use

It most often serves on ruins and damaged buildings, where a broken roof is a rewarding subject because it shows the roof frame, the attic and the inside of the house. It also comes into its own on the complete roofs of lean-tos, sheds and low farm buildings, where the roofing is seen at close range. A pile of tiles fallen into the mud at the foot of a wall is a detail that gives a scene a story with less work than any large element. When laying them, make sure the courses overlap regularly and that the pattern of the roofing is not entirely perfect over the whole area, because a natural roof always undulates a little.

Cleaning up and painting tips

Wash the parts and let them dry out, then dry-fit them on the base before you reach for glue. Prepare the roof base from a plastic or card sheet and lay the tiles from the bottom up so that the upper course overlaps the lower one. Painting fired roofing is rewarding: apply a base in a brick color and then play the individual tiles across a range of shades, as no roof is one color. A dark wash between the courses, fine greenish and gray patches of moss in shaded places and a light dry brush on the edges add credibility. A dust pigment at the eaves and where water runs down closes the whole off.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of dioramas with buildings and ruins in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want to lay a roof themselves instead of using a ready-made sheet
  • Those who build central and southern European city corners
  • Anyone who wants to practice playing a single area across a range of shades

The accessory is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue and a roof base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A classic fired roof tile with a rounded lower edge, common in central Europe on town houses and farm buildings alike.

It is not. It is a diorama element from which you lay a roof or part of one on a base of your own.

Check the number of pieces on the box. For larger areas it pays to get more than one package.

A base in a brick shade, then shade the individual tiles slightly, add a dark wash between the courses and suggest moss in the shaded places.
