A plastic kit of the American Gearing-class destroyer USS Southerland (DD-743) in 1:700 scale from Takom. This is a 2 in 1 box: besides the complete ship it also contains a separate model of the twin 127 mm gun mount (Mk.38) in the larger scale of 1:72 as a bonus display piece. The ship can be built in the full hull version. Photo-etched parts and decals for several marking options are included.
The Gearing class was the culmination of American destroyer development in the Second World War and grew out of an enlarged Fletcher class with a longer hull and greater range. USS Southerland (DD-743) was commissioned at the end of the war in 1945. Destroyers of this class later went through modernization and many of them served long after the war.
With ships in the small 1:700 scale it pays to decide in advance between the full hull version, for a display case with a stand, and the waterline variant. Glue the photo-etched railings and the fine parts with cyanoacrylate. Spray the hull and the decks with an airbrush; weathering with a wash and a dry brush will then bring out the rivets and the detail of the superstructures.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
