An injection-molded plastic kit of the light aircraft carrier Independence in her 1944 configuration. Watch the type of vessel: the CVL designation belongs to a light aircraft carrier, not to a cruiser. The main purchasing distinction is the edition level: this is the Deluxe edition, the middle of three levels. The manufacturer runs this line in three levels: Standard builds on plastic and decals, Deluxe adds detailing accessories and Platinum is the highest level. The scope differs from vessel to vessel, so check the contents on the box. The manufacturer also releases the same ship in the Standard version.
Independence was converted from a hull laid down on May 1, 1941 as the Cleveland-class light cruiser Amsterdam. She was launched in August 1942 and entered service on January 14, 1943 still as CV-22, being reclassified as CVL-22 in July of the same year. In 1946 she served as a target in the nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll, and in January 1951 she was sunk off the California coast. The year given refers to the wartime appearance of the ship, not to the year the kit was released.
The flight deck is the largest surface on the model, so paint it separately and check before gluing that it does not overhang anywhere. Deck line decals sit better on a gloss base. Fit the photo-etched railings only after the hull has been painted, and join the metal parts with cyanoacrylate glue. Paint the carrier aircraft separately before fitting them.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
