An injection-molded plastic kit of the battleship Iowa in her 1944 configuration. The main purchasing distinction is the equipment level: this is the Standard version, that is the basic level, which builds on plastic parts and decals. The manufacturer also releases the same ship in the Deluxe edition, which adds a set of detailing accessories to the plastic, and the Platinum level stands highest. So if you want photo-etch and metal parts straight out of the box, reach for a higher level. The scope of the accessories differs from vessel to vessel, so check the contents on the box.
Iowa was the first of the fast American battleships of her class and carried nine guns of 406 mm caliber in the Mark 7 design. She entered combat at the beginning of 1944 in the operation against the Marshall Islands, and in February of the same year she took part in the attack on Truk. In Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945 she was present at the signing of the Japanese surrender. The year given refers to exactly this wartime appearance of the vessel, not to the year the kit was released.
Decide between the full hull and the waterline, as the choice of stand depends on it too. Paint the superstructures and decks separately from the hull. The 1944 camouflage scheme has sharp transitions, so masking pays off. The small anti-aircraft armament is easier to paint while still on the sprue. A separately purchased photo-etched set with railings lifts the finished model considerably.
