This base from Uschi van der Rosten in 1:72 scale turns a bare shelf into a slice of an airfield. The motif combines a grassy area, a concrete hardstand and wooden planks, so that the aircraft model stands on a surface that gives meaning to its size and its setting. The print is on very heavy card of 300 gsm, and the area of the base measures 20 x 29 centimeters. This is the standard version, that is the printed base on its own.
The card is firm, but make the cuts with a sharp knife along a metal ruler, so that the edge is not left ragged. Depending on the arrangement you choose, the base is trimmed, folded and glued, so dry-fit it first to see how it will lay out. The edges and corners will show to advantage if you go over them lightly with a dark pencil after cutting; the transition between the grass and the concrete can then be picked out with a dry pigment. Protect the finished base from damp, to which the card responds by rippling.
