Fortifying Poland 1939 is not a model of a vehicle or an aircraft but a diorama set from the manufacturer Mirage Hobby. The subject is a Polish reinforced-concrete combat bunker from the interwar fortification program, completed with a diorama base, figures and small accessories. The result is a finished scene rather than a single model, and it can also be used as the basis for a larger diorama with your own equipment.
In the 1930s Poland was building belts of permanent fortifications on its western and eastern borders. Typical of them were small single-story reinforced-concrete combat structures with embrasures for machine guns and anti-tank guns, sunk into the terrain and covered with earth so that they could not be spotted from a distance. In September 1939 this line was neither finished nor fully manned, yet fighting took place at some of the structures and they became a permanent part of the story of the Polish defense.
In a small scale concrete is best imitated with a light gray base, over which you work only with a dark wash in the formwork joints and a dry brush on the edges. Suggest green and rusty streaks from the reinforcement very sparingly, otherwise the structure will look derelict rather than freshly built. Finish the figures separately and glue them to the base only at the end. Disguise the transition between the base and the structure with pigment and a fine scatter, so that the bunker looks sunk into the ground.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
