A sheet from the Colours and Codes range: a stock of letters and numerals from which a modeler puts together the tail code of a particular machine. It is yellow and the size of the characters corresponds to a height of 280 mm on the real aircraft, so in 1:72 scale just under 4 mm. It is not a set of national insignia, it is not a sheet of maintenance stencils and these are not the markings of particular named machines. The manufacturer issues the same characters in other colors as well, including a black version under the part number ADD72C022M3. The M3 designation belongs to a revised edition, which has more characters on a larger sheet than the older version.
Aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy carried on the vertical tail surface a code that joined the designation of the unit with the number of the particular machine. It was written as a combination of characters and numerals and its form changed several times during the war, because the system of designating units changed too. The color of the code was not uniform: depending on the unit, the period and the underlying colors, yellow, red, black and white all appear. The choice of color is therefore part of identifying a particular machine, and it is chosen from a photograph, not from taste.
Decals are not stuck down with modeling cement. They are applied onto a dried gloss coat, settled with water and a decal fixer, and on broken surfaces with a decal softener, so that the film follows the rivets and panel lines. Cut the individual markings close to the artwork. Compare both the color and the height of the characters against a photograph of your own machine; with Japanese codes the unit and the period are what decide.
