Injection-molded plastic kit of the German KFK war fishing cutter in 1:72 scale from the brand Special Navy, which belongs to the group of the Czech manufacturer Special Hobby. The 1:72 scale is rewarding with this type of vessel: the model reaches a size where the detail of the deck, of the superstructures and of the rigging is clearly visible. The model is meant to be glued and painted.
The Kriegsfischkutter, KFK for short, was a small wooden cutter with a diesel engine that the Kriegsmarine derived from an ordinary fishing vessel. Production began in 1942 and got under way in more than forty shipyards in seven European countries; 1072 units were ordered and 612 completed. The simple and undemanding design took various armaments, so the same cutter served as a patrol and escort vessel, as a minesweeper, as a training ship and as an anti-submarine boat. Of the completed examples 554 reached the fighting and 135 of them were sunk.
Glue the hull, putty the seams and sand them well; on a small vessel the joint is clearly visible. Spray and paint in the deck before you seat the superstructures on it. The wood of the deck comes out if you go over a light base with a thin brown wash in the direction of the planks. Add the railings and the rigging only at the end, so that they do not break while you handle the model. The hull suits wear: rust in patches below the hawse holes and water stains at the waterline, because these were working vessels.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
