About product

M8 Greyhound / M20 Armored Utility Car in 1:72 scale from Italeri

This kit from the Italian manufacturer Italeri in 1:72 scale captures the American light wheeled armored car M8 Greyhound and the variant derived from it, the M20 Armored Utility Car. Both vehicles stand on the same six-wheeled 6x6 chassis and differ above all in the superstructure: the M8 carries a rotating turret with a 37 mm gun, while the M20 lacks the turret and has an open hull with a ring mount for a heavy machine gun. The package thus covers both versions, and before the build you choose which of them you will make. It is a classic injection-molded plastic kit with decals and instructions, and its small size makes it a rewarding model for a display case as well as a diorama.

The real subject

The M8 Greyhound was an American reconnaissance armored car introduced during 1943. It was powered by a gasoline six-cylinder unit, it had drive to all six wheels, a crew of four, and its main armament consisted of a 37 mm gun in the turret supplemented by machine guns. It was fast on a paved road but lightly armored and vulnerable above all to mines. The name Greyhound took hold thanks to its British users. The car served with reconnaissance and cavalry units in Italy, after the Normandy landings and during the advance across western Europe. The M20 Armored Utility Car came about by removing the turret: an open space with a ring mount for a heavy machine gun remained in the hull and the vehicle served as a command, liaison and transport machine. Both versions remained in the service of a number of armies long after the war.

Building and painting tips

In a small scale it pays to work with a thin cement for plastic, which wicks into a joint and leaves no marks. Assemble and glue the chassis, wheels and axles before you close the hull up, and make sure all six wheels stand level. Use a primer before painting and apply the main shade with an airbrush. Emphasize the panel lines with a dark wash, lighten the edges lightly with a brush and apply pigments to the wheels and wheel arches for dust and mud effects. Apply the decals onto a gloss coat and even the whole model out with a matte clear at the end. With the M20 version bear in mind that the open hull is visible, so the interior is worth painting more carefully.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of military vehicles in 1:72 scale who build the Western Front
  • For beginners and intermediate builders, as the build is straightforward with no multimedia parts
  • For builders of dioramas, where a fast reconnaissance vehicle comes in handy
  • For anyone interested in the family of American 6x6 wheeled armored cars
  • For modelers who want the choice between the fighting and the command form of the vehicle

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The package covers both variants, the M8 with a rotating turret and a 37 mm gun as well as the turretless M20 with an open hull and a ring mount for a machine gun. The instructions enclosed with the kit give the exact procedure and the choice of parts.

Yes. It is an ordinary injection-molded plastic kit in a small scale with no photo-etch and no resin parts. A thin cement for plastic, a primer, acrylic paints and the decals are enough.

Both vehicles share the same six-wheeled chassis. The M8 is a reconnaissance armored car with a turret and a 37 mm gun, while the M20 is its turretless version with an open space in the hull, used as a command, liaison and transport car.
