SBS Model 1:72 — SBD Dauntless engine with oil cooler and exhausts is a 3D-printed resin replacement for the powerplant.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not an aircraft model but a replacement for its powerplant: according to the box the set holds the engine, the oil cooler and the exhausts for the SBD-1 to SBD-4 versions, in 1:72 scale. The Hungarian brand SBS Model makes resin and 3D-printed add-ons. On a radial engine the difference against plastic shows at once, because the cylinder heads are in view through the cowling and printed resin holds their detail crisper.
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was an American carrier-borne dive bomber that played the decisive role at the Battle of Midway. It was powered by a Wright radial engine, and the aircraft's characteristic feature is the perforated dive brakes on the wing. The early SBD-1 to SBD-4 versions differ from the later ones in details of the engine installation, the armament and the equipment, so a set cut for this group of versions need not match the later machines. On the Dauntless the engine installation is well exposed, because the cowling has a wide cutout.
Wash the parts clean of print residue and cut off the supports; sand the marks down carefully and protect your breathing while sanding. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Paint the engine while it is still loose: the cylinder heads in a metallic shade, the block dark, the exhausts in a burnt metal color with a rusty sheen. Suggest the wiring with a fine line. Seat the oil cooler dry before the glue sets, and glue the cowling on last; once painted, the clearance shrinks.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
