A set of five kits for the hundredth anniversary of the Swedish Air Force in 1:72 scale from Airfix. A cross-section of the development from a biplane to a supersonic fighter.
Responsibility details are not available.
For the anniversary Airfix has put together a collection that shows the whole road of one air force: from a fabric-covered biplane on skis through inherited Allied equipment to a supersonic fighter of its own. The set holds the Gloster Gladiator, the North American P-51 Mustang, a reconnaissance Supermarine Spitfire in the Mk.XIX version, the de Havilland Vampire and the Swedish Saab 35 Draken. According to the manufacturer it has 287 parts in all and offers five color schemes, one for each machine.
The Gladiator was the last British fighter biplane and in Swedish service it flew on skis as well. The P-51 and the Spitfire reached Sweden after the Second World War, the Spitfire in the photo-reconnaissance version with a lengthened nose for its V12 engine. The Vampire was one of the first jet machines in the inventory and had a pair of tail booms and a short fuselage nacelle. The Draken then marked a turning point: a supersonic fighter of Swedish design with its characteristic double-delta wing, built to take off from road strips.
Five models mean five different approaches. With the Gladiator, count on bracing wires and on struts that have to be dry-fitted. Finish and varnish the cockpits of all the machines before the fuselages are closed up. Plan the schemes in advance, so that all five models do not end up waiting on one color at once.
The models are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
