When the aging T-34s stopped being adequate as tanks after the Second World War, their chassis offered itself as a basis for self-propelled artillery. In the Middle East this gave rise to conversions in which the turret was taken off the tank, the inside of the hull was cleared out and the Soviet towed D-30 howitzer of 122 mm caliber was settled onto the hull. The howitzer stood in the front part of the hull and fired over the rear of the vehicle, so there was no need to intervene any more deeply in the hull. The result was a machine that could quickly take up a firing position and drive away again, though with its crew in the open and with no armor protection at the weapon. Syria and Egypt both built similar conversions for themselves.
Finish and paint the running gear of the T-34 before you settle the howitzer in place; afterwards you will not get at it. Assemble the carriage and the shield of the howitzer according to the instructions and check the angles, so that the weapon does not point crookedly. Light ocher or a sand color with a light wash suits desert finishes; apply dust from the top downward, not only into the corners, because on dry ground it settles on all horizontal surfaces.
