The Tupolev Tu-154M in 1:72 scale from HPH Models

A Soviet three-engine jet airliner in 1:72 scale as a resin kit. The maker is the Czech brand HPH Models, which casts its parts from polyurethane resin into silicone molds under vacuum. In a large scale, airliners are practically never produced in injection-molded plastic, and it is precisely this gap that resin models fill. The build is more demanding than with plastic, so the model is intended for experienced modelers.

The real subject

For decades the Tu-154 was the backbone of medium-range transport in Eastern Europe and in Asia. It carries three engines at the rear, the tail surfaces sit on top of the fin and the landing gear retracts into fairings behind the wing. A striking feature is the multi-wheel landing gear, which allowed the aircraft to operate even from unpaved and poorly maintained surfaces. The M version is the most fully developed and most widespread form: it was given more economical engines, a modified wing and a longer range, which made it the longest-serving variant of the type.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water to remove the mold release agent, or the paint will not hold on them. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a cutter, never break them off. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, that is, with super glue, because cement for plastic does not soften resin. Use respiratory protection when sanding and cutting. A primer coat is needed before painting, and it will at the same time show up any imperfections in the surface.
