An injection-molded plastic kit of the express steam locomotive of class 18 505 and of its tender in 1:87 scale, that is in the usual H0 model railway scale. The manufacturer is the German company Revell. It is a Model Set edition, so besides the sprues with the parts, the decals and the instructions the package also holds basic paints, a brush and glue; the kind of paints supplied is stated on the box.
Class 18 belongs among the most elegant German express steam engines. It follows on from the Bavarian class S 3/6, express locomotives with the Pacific wheel arrangement that the Munich firm Maffei built from 1908. The machines proved themselves on demanding lines and lived on into the service of the German Federal Railway. The 18 505 version runs with the large tender; its type is stated on the box, because the manufacturer also carries a variant with a smaller one.
Assemble and paint the chassis, the wheelsets and the valve gear before you close the frame — a brush will not reach them later. It is practical to paint the boiler and the cab separately and to join them only once dry. Telling the surfaces apart brings a black steam locomotive to life: a matte boiler, satin sheet metal and a darker flue. Choose the thinner according to the kind of paints stated on the box. The supplied brush is enough for the large areas; have a finer one ready for the small detail. A dry brush and fine pigments will suggest coal dust and limescale.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. With the Model Set edition the basic paints, a brush and glue are, according to the manufacturer, part of the package; other accessories are not.
