A monograph on the British Buccaneer carrier-borne strike aircraft, volume number 2 of the British Warpaint series, by Paul Jackson and Peter Foster. It is a printed publication about the aircraft, not a kit and not an accessory for a build. The series is set up so that one volume covers one type from the prototype to the last version — through archive photographs, color profiles and scale drawings.
The Buccaneer was designed for a single task: to fly in under the radar and hit a target from very low altitude at high speed. That is why it has a solid, thick fuselage with the characteristic waisting that follows the area rule, a rotary bomb bay instead of conventional doors, and blown flaps that cut its landing speed onto the deck of an aircraft carrier. The first S.1 version with de Havilland Gyron Junior engines was underpowered; only the S.2 with Rolls-Royce Spey turbofans gave the type the performance it needed. After it left naval service it still flew with the RAF, and its last use came in 1991 over Iraq as a carrier for a laser designator.
Above all for modelers who are building a model of this type and are looking for reference on the colors, the markings and the details of a particular machine. Then for aviation historians and collectors of monographs, who will find the series a quick and clear reference handbook to a single type. The text is in English, so a basic command of the language is assumed.
