A sheet of foam material ten millimeters thick in a medium density, meant for building costumes, armor and props. A thicker sheet suits places where bulk is needed: massive pauldrons, padding, the base of large props and parts that are meant to have a real thickness. Medium density is at the same time softer than high, so it bends better and is more comfortable to wear.
The foam is cut with a sharp knife that needs changing often, because a blunt blade tears the material. On a ten-millimeter sheet make the cut in several strokes and do not try to get through it in one. A bevel cut lets parts be glued into a three-dimensional shape without a visible seam. The material is shaped with heat and holds the shape once it cools; it is glued with contact adhesive or cyanoacrylate. The surface has to be sealed with a flexible coating before painting, otherwise the foam soaks the paint up and cracks when bent.

There is a risk of the knife slipping when cutting, so work on a mat and guide the blade away from you. Ventilate when heat-forming and sanding, and store the material out of reach of children and away from sources of open flame.
