About product

DSPIAE DB-03 carbide drill bits, range 0.3 to 1.2 mm

A set of ten drill bits covering the small diameters most often used, from 0.3 to 1.2 mm. Carbide is considerably harder than ordinary high-speed steel, so a bit keeps its edge longer and cuts cleanly in plastic and resin, without burrs around the hole.

The workmanship

According to the manufacturer the bits have a uniform shank 3.175 mm in diameter, that is the size common on modeling drills and in the chucks of hand holders. You therefore do not have to change the clamping for every diameter. The geometry of the flutes is designed to clear the chips, which with small holes is the main thing that decides between a clean hole and a jammed bit.

How to work with them

  • Mark the spot with a point first, otherwise the bit will slide off a rounded surface.
  • Guide the thinnest diameters slowly and without sideways pressure; carbide is hard but brittle.
  • Pull the chips out as you go; built up in the flute they will jam the bit and snap it.
  • Drill into resin at low speed, otherwise the material melts.
  • Store the bits separately after work, as knocking against each other chips the edge.

Who it is for

The set is basic equipment for anyone who drills holes for brass pins, exhausts, handrails, gun barrels, rigging or the mounting of photo-etched parts. The range up to 1.2 mm covers the vast majority of modeling work.

A broken-off tip is sharp and very small, so use eye protection while drilling.

FAQ

According to the manufacturer the shank has a uniform diameter of 3.175 mm, which is the size common on modeling drills and in the chucks of hand holders.

Carbide is hard but brittle. It will not take sideways pressure or chips built up in the flute, so keep the bit perpendicular and pull the chips out as you go.

Yes, but at low speed. At high speed the material melts and sticks to the bit.

Ten pieces spread across the range from 0.3 to 1.2 mm.
