A photographic publication, volume 12 of the numbered Wingleader Photo Archive series from the British publisher Wingleader; the author is Andrew Thomas. The title defines the scope as both the RAF and overseas users, of which the Gladiator had an exceptional number, so the publication does not stay with the British squadrons.
The Gladiator was the last biplane fighter of the RAF and at the same time the first with an enclosed cockpit and four machine guns; it was powered by the Bristol Mercury radial. By the time it appeared it was technically at the end of its road, but the war found it in service and it fought in places more modern types could not reach: in Norway, in Greece, in East Africa and over Malta, where a handful of naval Sea Gladiators passed into legend. It was exported to a number of countries and some of the machines also flew on skis in winter conditions. The result is an unusual variety of colors, markings and equipment, of a kind you rarely find on a single type.
For modelers looking for an unconventional form of the Gladiator and needing evidence for the colors, and for anyone interested in the end of the biplane era. It is a book; the photographs and profiles can be used in any scale.
