A round brush with natural Kolinsky sable hair, in size 2, from the Gold Series. Quality natural hair takes up markedly more paint than synthetic and returns to a perfect point after every stroke. Size 2 is therefore the most versatile choice for figure painters: with the belly of the brush you cover an area, with the point you finish the detail.
It suits base coats on smaller areas, building shadows and highlights on figures, glazes and most ordinary work with paint. On one load of paint it manages a longer stroke than the smaller sizes, which matters a great deal for smooth transitions. For the finest details such as eyes, reach for a smaller size; for large areas, on the contrary, for a flat brush.
Pick the paint up only on part of the length of the hair, never up to the metal ferrule. Thin the paint; thick paint settles in the hair and splays it. After work, wash the brush out, shape the hair into a point with your fingers and let it dry lying flat. For pigments and dry-brushing use a separate synthetic brush, as natural hair would be ruined for nothing. If the brush stops returning to a point after longer work, dried paint at the root of the hair is usually to blame, not wear on the tip.
