Hawker Typhoon Part 2 - Summer 1943 to Early 1944 — the twenty-first volume of the Wingleader Photo Archive series, the second part of the photographic treatment of the Typhoon, defined by the period from the summer of 1943 to the beginning of 1944.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a photographic publication for modelers and aviation historians, not a kit. The twenty-first volume of the numbered Photo Archive series of the British publisher Wingleader was written by Chris Thomas. With the Typhoon the parts are told apart by period, not by version: this second one keeps, according to the box, to the summer of 1943 to the beginning of 1944, the first part covers the years 1940 to the spring of 1943 and the third the spring to the fall of 1944. Without that distinguishing mark the volumes cannot be told from one another.
The Hawker Typhoon was born with difficulty. It was to replace the Hurricane as an interceptor, but the powerful Napier Sabre engine suffered failures, at high altitude the aircraft fell behind and from a distance its silhouette was confused with the Focke-Wulf Fw 190. It was precisely in the period the volume defines that the Typhoon found its true calling: with four cannon of 20 mm caliber, bombs under the wing and, from the end of 1943, rocket projectiles as well, it became the most effective British fighter-bomber. At the same time it was being given a molded clear canopy in place of the original one with a door, and a four-blade propeller.
For modelers who build the Typhoon and need to know what a machine looked like in exactly this period — the canopy, the propeller, the armament and the markings changed markedly during the war. It will appeal to readers interested in British fighter-bombers as well.
