A photographic publication, volume 13 of the numbered Wingleader Photo Archive series from the British publisher Wingleader; the author is Mark Postlethwaite. The part keeps to the units with the He 111 in the Battle of Britain and in the night Blitz that followed, that is to one defined period rather than to the whole career of the type.
The He 111 entered the war as a modern machine, but by 1940 its defensive armament was already weak against British fighters and its load limited. Bombs were hung vertically in cells in the fuselage, which limited their caliber. The P and H versions have a smoothly glazed nose without a step, and that is the recognition mark that separates the machines of this period from the older forms. After heavy daylight losses the wings went over to night raids, and with them came radio beam guidance, which could bring a bomber to its target in complete darkness. From that follow the dark colors and the subdued markings you will see in photographs from this period.
For modelers of the He 111 who are building a machine from 1940 or 1941 and need evidence for the colors and markings, and for anyone interested in the German bomber force. It is a publication, not a kit.
