A publication, not a kit. Volume 107 of the aviation series from the British publisher Warpaint Books, by Oleg Rastrenin, is devoted to the Ilyushin Il-2. The publisher states for this volume that it was the main ground-attack aircraft of the Soviet Air Force and that over thirty-six thousand were built during the war. The text is in English.
The Il-2 was not an ordinary aircraft with armor added. The armored hull, which carries the engine, the radiators, the tanks and the cockpit, was itself the load-bearing part of the structure, so the aircraft could take hits at the low altitudes where it worked. The armament consisted of cannons and machine guns in the wing, unguided rockets and bombs; against tanks, shaped-charge bomblets were scattered from cassettes at low altitude. The first batches were single-seat, which proved a mistake, and from 1942 a two-seat version with a rear gunner was produced. For a modeler this very difference is essential, because it changes the whole rear fuselage and the glazing.
For modelers who build the Il-2 in 1:72 or 1:48 scale and need to tell the versions and the Soviet camouflage scheme apart, and for anyone interested in the war on the Eastern Front. The extent of the volume is not stated here; the page count differs between the individual titles in the series.
