A publication, not a kit. Volume 43 of the aviation series from the British publisher Warpaint Books, by Charles Stafrace, is devoted to the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter. The text is in English and the softcover format is close to A4.
The Starfighter was created in Kelly Johnson's design office as a light high-altitude interceptor and its shape is unmistakable: a very short, thin trapezoidal wing with a sharp leading edge, a horizontal tail mounted at the top of the fin and a single General Electric J79 engine. It first flew in 1954, it managed twice the speed of sound, and for that look and those figures it earned the nickname the missile with a man in it. It lasted only briefly in American service; the turning point was the multirole F-104G version, built under license by European, Canadian and Japanese companies, which served a number of air arms in the fighter-bomber and reconnaissance roles. The high accident rate of some fleets also earned it derisive nicknames. The Italian version with air-to-air missiles served longest of all.
For modelers who build the Starfighter in 1:72 or 1:48 scale and want a reference for the markings of the individual operators at hand, and for anyone interested in supersonic aviation of the Cold War. The extent of the volume is not stated here; the page count differs between the individual titles in the series.
