A specialist pictorial publication from HMH Publications devoted to the carrier aircraft Lockheed S-3 Viking. It serves as reference for building and detailing models of this type.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Lockheed S-3 Viking was a carrier-based jet aircraft of the US Navy, originally intended for finding and destroying submarines. You recognize it by its high-set wing, the pair of engines slung beneath it and the sturdy landing gear that will take a hard arrival on a carrier deck. The crew consisted of four men. In later years the machines moved to other duties, above all air-to-air refueling and reconnaissance.
The title was published by HMH Publications under the publisher's reference DH-044. Its focus is pictorial material, that is, photographs of the real machines and their details, which are hard to find in ordinary aviation books. The publication therefore serves mainly as working reference at the modeling bench rather than as reading on the history of the type.
Photographs of details help when deciding on the colors of the cockpit, on the installation in the gear bays or on the placement of warning lettering. It has its place with S-3 models in any scale, because the reference is independent of the size of a kit. It serves just as well when looking for the small differences between individual machines and when planning more demanding modifications. It also serves well when modifying and adding to older tooling whose details do not match reality.
It will be appreciated by modelers of carrier aviation and by collectors of literature on naval subjects. It is a printed publication, not a kit. The package contains no parts, decals, paints or model, unless stated otherwise.
