A DSPIAE masking tape dispenser in red. It holds the roll firmly in place and lets you tear off a straight piece of tape with one hand.

This is an aid, not a masking material: a dispenser into which a roll of masking tape is loaded, from the Chinese maker of modeling tools DSPIAE. The finish is red. The point is simple: a roll held in a dispenser does not roll away, does not unwind and the tape can be torn off it with one hand while you hold the model with the other. Anyone who has ever masked a canopy with the roll loose on the bench knows the difference.
For anyone who masks airbrush work and holds the model in their hand while doing it. Check beforehand what widths and inner diameter of roll you use, because the dispenser has a fixed inner spindle and a very wide or, conversely, a very narrow roll need not sit in it firmly enough to stay still when the tape is torn. One further practical detail: load the roll so that the tape unwinds adhesive side down, otherwise it will stick to the edge of the dispenser when you tear it and the end of the tape will pick up dust from the work surface.
The dispenser is not a toy, so keep it out of the reach of children. If a metal tear-off edge is part of it, treat it like a blade and do not run your fingers along it. Do not stand the dispenser where you are spraying either; once the edge is coated it stops tearing the tape.
