About product

Glauco - the Italian submarine of 1905 to 1916 in 1:144 scale from Mikromir

A kit of the Italian submarine Glauco in 1:144 scale. The Ukrainian brand Mikromir specializes in subjects that nobody else makes, and Glauco is a good example of that: she was one of the very first Italian submarines of all. Mikromir molds are made by short-run injection. The contents of the package are not stated here. The list is given in the instructions.

The real subject

Glauco was the first boat of the five-strong class of the same name, designed for the Italian Royal Navy by Cesare Laurenti. The keel was laid down on July 1, 1903 at the Venice arsenal, the launch took place on July 9, 1905 and the boat entered service on December 15, 1905. The terminology of the day called her a submersible torpedo boat. Glauco was more heavily armed than her sisters: she carried three bow torpedo tubes of 450 mm caliber, while the other boats of the class had only two. In August 1914 she belonged to the submarine division at Venice; after Italy entered the war she lay at Brindisi and later at Taranto and at the Albanian port of Valona. During the war she completed sixty-five defensive patrols and in September 1916 she was stricken.

Building and painting tips

With a short-run mold, reckon on handwork: dry-fit the parts, cut off the flash and the sprue nubs and level the mating faces of the hull halves on a sheet of glass. The long seam along the hull is worth filling and sanding smooth, because on a clean hull silhouette every unevenness shows. A uniform dark finish comes alive with fine edge highlighting and careful rust around the drain openings.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers with experience of short-run molds

  • Anyone interested in the Italian navy of the First World War
  • Builders of early and unusual submarine subjects

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The one of 1905, the first boat of the five-strong class designed by Cesare Laurenti. The later Italian Glauco class of the 1930s is a different boat.

Injection at lower pressure in smaller runs. The parts have coarser gates and call for dry-fitting and more handwork than an ordinary mass-production kit.

Three bow torpedo tubes of 450 mm caliber. The other boats of the class had only two, and Glauco was the exception in this.

It is not stated here. The exact list of parts is given in the instructions supplied with the kit.
