An injection-molded plastic kit of the American tactical transport aircraft in its spray-equipped form, from the Sova Model brand, the manufacturer's part number SVM-14026. The subject is the UC-123K, that is, a machine with a spraying installation, in the form it had in service over South Vietnam in the nineteen-seventies. The manufacturer offers the Provider in other forms as well, so it is precisely the spraying equipment that sets this kit apart. Check the extent of the markings on the box.
The Provider came about as an undemanding transport aircraft for short and unprepared strips. The K version is its most striking modification: two auxiliary jet units were added under the wing alongside the two piston radial engines, which raised the useful load, shortened the takeoff run and improved the rate of climb, and over the Vietnamese jungle with a fully loaded machine that was essential. The prefix U marked machines with a spraying installation. Providers modified in this way flew low and straight over the jungle and sprayed defoliants to expose roads and supply trails. It was dangerous work within range of a hand-held weapon; aerial spraying over Southeast Asia ended at the beginning of the nineteen-seventies.
In 1:144 scale the aircraft is small, but it has a long straight wing, so dry-fit the joints of the wing to the fuselage and let them harden in a horizontal position. It pays to outline the fine canopy frames with a dark paint instead of masking them. Spray machines tended to be weathered and stained on the outside, so restrained weathering on the underside and behind the engines looks more faithful than clean paint.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
