The DSPIAE PT-SP15 acrylic sanding pad set, 1500 grit

Three sanding pads of clear acrylic in three widths, large, medium and small, together with self-adhesive abrasive papers. Acrylic is more flexible than metal, so a pad adapts slightly to a curve, while at the same time being stiff enough not to copy unevenness the way a soft sponge does. It is a compromise between a rigid plate and a flexible sponge, and that is exactly why it suits shaped faces.

Three widths

The widest pad covers an ordinary face, the medium one suits narrower panels and the narrowest reaches between details and into joints. The 1500 grit is a finishing grade: it practically removes no material any more, it only smooths away the marks of the previous step and prepares the surface for a gloss coat.

How to work with them

• Stick the paper onto a clean surface; it will not hold on dust and shifts on the first stroke.
• Guide the pad on its whole face and with a smooth stroke.
• Clean the part before this step, as a grain from a coarser paper will make a scratch.
• Replace a clogged paper; a blocked abrasive burnishes the surface instead of cutting it.

Who it is for

The set is for modelers who finish shaped faces before a gloss coat or metallic paint. On matte finishes the benefit of this grit is lost under the paint. The line also comes in coarser grits, which are topped up separately.

Acrylic sanding pads go well together with rigid sanding plates: a plate levels a flat face, a pad finishes a shape. Do not breathe in the sanding dust from plastic and resin; work with extraction or at least with a respirator.
