Academy — educational kit of the Penydarren steam locomotive shows how the oldest steam engine on rails works.
Responsibility details are not available.
A kit from the educational line of the Academy brand. It is not a collector's model in an exact modeling scale, but a kit meant to show the principle: how the movement of the piston is transferred to the wheels and how the whole mechanism of a steam locomotive hangs together. The manufacturer does not state the scale. The extent of the box and whether a drive is included are not stated either; please check that before buying if it matters to you.
The locomotive connected with the Penydarren ironworks in Wales is written into history as the first steam engine that hauled a load on rails, in 1804. It was built by Richard Trevithick, and the run from Penydarren became proof that a steam engine on rails could replace horses. The machine had a single horizontal cylinder, a large flywheel and a cylindrical boiler. The rails of the day were cast iron and cracked under the weight of the locomotive, so the idea did not spread at once; but the principle was out in the world.
If you want the model to look good as well, it pays to paint the parts: the boiler and the frame in dark metal shades, the wooden parts with a stain. Leave the moving parts unpainted where they rub, otherwise they will seize. Paint small parts while they are still on the sprue.
The kit contains small parts, so it is not suitable for small children without supervision. If a drive is included, do not leave the model running unsupervised.
