A photographic publication, volume 6 of the numbered Wingleader Photo Archive series from the British publisher Wingleader. Note the scope: Wingleader issued volume 6 of this series under the title Supermarine Spitfire Mk V in Europe and North Africa, that is with a definition by Europe and North Africa. Anyone looking for the Mk.V on all fronts including the Far East should check the extent in advance.
The Mk.V was the most numerous version of the Spitfire. Into the airframe of the Mk.I and Mk.II it took the more powerful Merlin 45, and in the Vb form it carried two twenty-millimeter cannon and four machine guns. For Malta and Africa a bulky dust filter was fitted under the nose, which cost the machine some performance, and for low altitudes the wingtips were clipped on the LF.Vb version. From the end of 1941 the Mk.V had a hard opponent in the Focke-Wulf Fw 190, and most of the photographs from Europe were taken in exactly that unfavorable period. The result is a great variety of forms: the filters, the wingtips, the exhausts and the colors all differ according to the area of operations.
For modelers who build the Spitfire Mk.V and want the filter, the wingtips and the colors to match the area of operations. It is picture reference, not a kit and not drawing documentation for a particular scale.
