Heinkel He-177 Greif — the twentieth volume of the Airframe Album series from Valiant Wings Publishing, a specialist publication on the only German heavy bomber to be series-produced.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is a specialist publication for modelers, not a kit. The twentieth volume of the numbered Airframe Album series of the British publishing house Valiant Wings Publishing was written by Richard A. Franks and devoted to the only German heavy bomber that reached series production.
The Heinkel He 177 Greif was meant to be a long-range bomber, but its troubles had one main cause: the coupled Daimler-Benz DB 606 and later DB 610 power units, in which two twelve-cylinder engines drove a single propeller. The tight installation overheated and engine fires in the air accompanied the whole career of the type. It was committed even so: in 1944 against Great Britain in Operation Steinbock and on the Eastern Front against railway targets. In the end a shortage of fuel and the machines' vulnerability left them on the ground.
For modelers who build the He 177 and need reference for the engine nacelles, the bomb bay, the defensive armament and the differences between the A-3 and A-5 series. It will appeal to anyone interested in the German bomber force as well.
