The Japanese midget submarine tender Chiyoda 1:700 from Aoshima is an injection-molded plastic kit in a waterline version (a hull down to the waterline).
Responsibility details are not available.
A plastic kit of the Japanese ship Chiyoda in 1:700 scale from the waterline line. The hull is cut at the waterline, so once assembled the model looks as though it were afloat, and it suits a base as well as a harbor diorama. The ship is rendered in her role as a carrier of midget submarines, and the set also holds midget submarines and floatplanes stowed on deck.
Chiyoda was a vessel of the Imperial Japanese Navy built in the second half of the 1930s, originally as a seaplane tender. Before the outbreak of the war in the Pacific she went through a rebuild into a tender for midget submarines, which she released to attack enemy anchorages. In the later phase of the war she was rebuilt again, this time into a light aircraft carrier. It is precisely the variety of her duties that makes Chiyoda an interesting subject for collectors of Japanese naval equipment.
The small superstructure and crane parts are best separated with a sharp knife and the gates cleaned up, so that the fine elements do not stay filled in. We recommend a coat of primer and an airbrush for an even finish on the deck and the sides. The model comes alive splendidly with photo-etched railings and safety nets from accessory sets. A weathered look comes from dark washes into the recesses of the deck and light dry shadows on the edges.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
