The real subject

The Westland Wessex was a British multi-role helicopter derived from the American Sikorsky S-58 design, fitted with turbine power in place of the original piston engine. The HU.5 version served with the Royal Navy for troop transport and insertion, meaning work from ship decks and improvised landing areas. That is exactly where the airflow risks pulling small stones, sand or debris into the intake, which could damage the engine internally. The aircraft therefore carries a protective mesh in front of the intake, clearly visible on the real helicopter and a prominent feature on the model's nose area.

Building and painting tips

The part is not made of polystyrene; it is glued with cyanoacrylate. Cut away excess material a short distance from the part with a sharp blade and carefully sand the rest so the fine structure stays intact. Before painting, wash the part in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry fully, or the paint will not adhere reliably.

Apply the paint in thin coats; a single heavy coat will fill in the mesh openings and the whole effect will be lost. A dark base coat with light edge highlighting works well and adds depth to the structure. Fit the part only after finishing the surrounding areas, so you do not damage it while sanding.
