Wooden buckets in the generous 1:16 scale. Six pieces in three versions, so enough for a yard, a stable and the deck of a vehicle.
Responsibility details are not available.
There are objects a viewer never consciously notices, and yet without them a scene looks like an exhibition table. The wooden bucket is the textbook example. Stood against the wall of a barn, tipped over beside a cart wheel or forgotten by a water trough, it says that somebody worked here, without a single further prop having to appear.
Reduced to one sixteenth, a bucket comes out about two centimeters tall, and that is an object on which everything shows — the growth rings, the hoops, the joint between the staves and any bubble left by casting. It works both ways: a large scale rewards careful work and mercilessly points out sloppy work.
The grain under the paint. Suggest the fibers with the sharp edge of a scalpel before you varnish, drawing in one direction. After that a light base, a brownish glaze and a pass with a dry brush are all it takes.
Metal on the hoops. Leave the hoops darker and with a rusty touch — the contrast against the warm wood is what tells the eye what the material is.
Where the bucket stands. With a figure, watch the height of the handle so that the hand is not reaching into empty air, and do not forget a small shadow where the object touches the ground. Without it the object floats. And if the bucket holds water, remember that the surface has to stay level even when the terrain slopes.
The set rewards collectors who do not build dioramas at all. Props in one sixteenth serve as a practice piece for the technique of painting wood, which you can then apply more easily to crates, ladders or the bed of a wagon.
