Paint masks for the cockpit of the MiG-21PF, 1:48 scale

Masks for spraying the cockpit glazing of the MiG-21PF in 1:48 scale. They cover the clear areas so that the paint stays only on the frames of the canopy and the windscreen.

Why the masks pay off

The frames of a cockpit are the first thing anyone notices on a model. Cutting them from adhesive tape means weighing every cut directly on a fragile part, and one slip shows forever. Masks shaped in advance do away with that work: they seat according to the shape of the part, they hold both while spraying and while sanding, and the edge stays sharp.

The real subject

The MiG-21 is a Soviet supersonic fighter with a delta wing, one of the most widespread machines of its day. The PF version belongs to the interceptor variants fitted with radar and therefore has a typically shaped nose with a cone in the intake.

How to use the masks

  • Wash and degrease the glazing first; on a greasy surface a mask will not hold.
  • Apply the masks before spraying rather than onto dried paint.
  • Press the edges down with a toothpick or a soft tool, so that paint does not creep under them.
  • Spray in thin coats; a heavy coat tears when the mask is removed.
  • Take the masks off while the paint has only just dried, with tweezers and a pull at an angle to the surface.

Who they are for

For anyone who builds the MiG-21PF in 1:48 scale and wants a clean cockpit without laborious cutting of tape. It is an accessory to a kit, not the kit itself.

The kit, paints and glue are not supplied, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A sheet of paint masks for the cockpit glazing of the MiG-21PF in 1:48 scale. The manufacturer gives the exact number of pieces and their list.

The name gives only the type of aircraft and the scale, not a particular kit. Offer the masks up dry before applying them, therefore, and check that they match the shape of your canopy.

Before spraying. Wash and degrease the glazing beforehand, press the masks down all the way round and only then spray, and do so in thin coats.

They come off best shortly after the paint has dried, with tweezers and a pull at an angle to the surface. Under a heavy coat of paint the edge tears more often, so spray rather thinly.
