A decal set in 1:24 scale from Studio27 with which you re-mark a model of the Porsche 934 into the American racing colors of the 1976 season. Let us say it straight away: this is not a kit. The package contains no parts, strictly decals. The model itself, that is the Porsche 934 kit from Tamiya, has to be obtained separately, together with the paints and the glue.

One car, dozens of faces

The Porsche 934 was created for Group 4 as a racing derivative of the 911 Turbo. Characteristic are the blown-out fenders across the whole width of the car, the front spoiler and the rear wing. But Porsche did not build it for itself: it was a customer car for sale which went into the hands of private teams in Europe and in America. That is exactly why so many of its color schemes exist and exactly why decal sheets make sense: the box from Tamiya offers one or two liveries, whereas with a sheet you build that particular car you are interested in.

This sheet aims at the USA. Al Holbert is one of the greatest names of American endurance racing, a driver and a designer who later made his name at Le Mans behind the wheel of a Porsche as well. In 1976 he was among the first to enter a freshly delivered Porsche 934 in North America, and his blue car with the G. W. Dickinson sponsor marking is one of the iconic American 934s. Compared with European sponsor billboards the livery is more restrained, and it looks all the cleaner on a model for it.

Application tips

The basis is simple and unconditional: coat to a gloss and only then apply the decals. On a matte finish the decal silvers (white edges of the film) and you will not put it right any more, which is by far the most common mistake on models of race cars. On the curved, strongly bulging fenders of the 934 use decal softener; the film yields to the shape and no wrinkles are left. Do not forget that the sheet does not cover the whole body: the blue color of the car and the other areas have to be sprayed, so get the matching paints to go with the sheet right away. At the end comes clear coat over the decals and polishing: the markings disappear under the coat and the car gets that wet, deep shine of a real racing special.
