Here it is necessary to speak clearly: this is not a kit. You are buying a decal sheet of the brand Studio27 in 1:24 scale, that is a set of markings. The model itself, the Mercedes SLS AMG GT3 plastic kit from Fujimi, has to be at home or ordered at the same time. The sheet carries the livery of the car of the Black Falcon stable with race number 18 from Monza 2014.

Black Falcon sent two sister SLS GT3 cars into the 2014 endurance season and both Monza sheets exist separately. This sheet is car number 18. The other sheet carries number 19, the same team, the same race, the same year. According to the records of the 2014 season both cars started in different categories: number eighteen in the Pro-Am Cup, number nineteen in the Pro Cup, that is with different crews. Visually, though, they differ above all in the race number and the accompanying sponsor markings. So choose according to the number of the car, otherwise you will build a different car than you wanted. An older Black Falcon No. 19 sheet from 2012 and other SLS GT3 liveries exist as well.

Monza and the real subject

Autodromo Nazionale Monza is not nicknamed the temple of speed for nothing: it is the fastest circuit in Europe, made up of long straights and hard braking points in a historic park by the town. The endurance series opened its season there in 2014. The real subject, the Mercedes SLS AMG, has unmistakable doors that open upward, gull wings, with which Mercedes knowingly referred to the legendary 300 SL Gullwing of the 1950s; on a model it is the most striking element of the shape. The GT3 version was a customer racing special raced by dozens of teams, which is why so many sheets exist for it and why collectors buy precisely their car.

So that the markings look painted on

• The base under the decals has to be glossy. On a matte one air is trapped under the film and the decal silvers, the most common and practically unrepairable mistake.
• On the curved sides and the hood use decal softener; with large sponsor markings it is a necessity, not a luxury.
• At the end clear coat and polishing, as the edges of the films disappear and the car gains a wet shine.
• The color of the body has to match, because the sheet does not cover the whole area; the rest you spray yourself with model paints.
