Careful, this is not a kit: it is a 1:20 decal sheet from the Japanese Studio27 with which you will mark a finished model of the Tyrrell 004 built from the Ebbro kit (a Japanese maker of classic formula cars in 1:20 scale). The decals reproduce the livery of the sponsor Embassy as the car looked at its South African entries in 1973 and 1974. The model, paints and clear coat are not in the package.
Tyrrell is a legendary British team: with the Tyrrell 003 car Jackie Stewart fought out the world champion title. The 004 type is from the same family of simple, light and fast formula cars of the turn of the 1960s and 1970s: a narrow monocoque, huge rear tires, massive wings and absolutely minimal protection for the driver. It was a beautiful and brutal period alike, where the courage of the drivers was part of the job description.
Older cars of works teams often moved on to privateers at that time. That is exactly how the Tyrrell 004 got to South Africa, where it started with the support of the cigarette brand Embassy, at a time when tobacco sponsors were literally keeping F1 afloat. This sheet captures its South African appearance, which you will not find in ordinary kits.
The basis is a glossy base: a decal applied to matte clear coat silvers, turning milky white, because air stays under the film. If you spray the car with matte paint, go over it with gloss clear coat first and only then apply them. For the narrow nose and the curved edges of the wings have decal softener ready, as with formula cars that is not a luxury but a necessity. A final clear coat and gentle polishing give the car the wet look of period photographs; weathering is not done on F1 cars, so the result stands and falls with the depth of the gloss.
