About product

1:24 decal sheet, BMW 318i, Watson's, Macau Guia Race 1993 (Studio27)

Careful, this is not a kit and it contains no parts. It is a sheet of water-transferred decals alone from the brand Studio27 in 1:24 scale with which you re-mark a finished model into the famous livery from Macau. The sheet is intended for the BMW 318i plastic kits from Hasegawa. In the package there is a decal sheet and instructions for the placement, nothing more. A note for orientation: for the same livery there also exists a richer variant of the set which, besides decals, holds detail parts for improving the model; it exists as a separate product under the same car. They are two different products; this one is purely a decal one.

The real subject

The BMW 318i (E36) was a touring car, a racing special derived from the production sedan which carried touring car championships all over the world in the 1990s. Watson's is neither a driver nor a version of the engine, but a Hong Kong brand of drinks and bottled water, that is a sponsor. In the Watson's livery the works cars of the Schnitzer Motorsport stable started in the Guia Race in Macau in 1993. The Guia circuit in Macau is a legendary street course: narrow streets between concrete walls, practically no run-off areas and a long fast section followed by tight hairpins up the hill. A mistake is not punished here by a trip into the gravel but by contact with a wall, which is why Guia ranks among the most demanding circuits in the world. The year 1993 was a transitional one on top of that: alongside the modern Super Touring cars, more powerful specials to the German DTM rules were still allowed to start here, and it was one of them, the BMW M3 of Charles Kwan, that won the whole race in the end.

Tips for applying the decals

The base has to be glossy. On matte clear coat air is trapped under the decal and the marking silvers, which is the most common mistake and on a white car with colored markings it shows immediately. Large-area sponsor decals run across the edges of the fenders and the sills, so use decal softener, so that the membrane is drawn to the shape of the body. Once it is dry comes clear coat and gentle polishing, so that the edges of the decals disappear and the coat looks wet. And above all: the sheet does not cover the whole body, so you have to spray the basic color of the car yourself in such a way that its shade follows on from the printed areas.

Who the sheet is for

  • Modelers who already have the BMW 318i kit from Hasegawa
  • Fans of touring cars of the 1990s and of the races in Macau
  • Those who want decals only and do not need detail parts
  • Collectors who want to build the Motorola car from the 1994 running alongside the 1993 one (that sheet exists as well)

This is a decal sheet, not a model. The kit of the car, paints, clear coats, softener and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is purely a decal sheet. For the same livery a separate richer set also exists which, besides decals, holds detail parts as well; it is a different product.

The BMW 318i plastic kits in 1:24 scale from Hasegawa. The model is not included in the package and is bought separately.

It is the name of a sponsor, a Hong Kong brand of drinks and bottled water. It is neither a driver nor a version of the car.

Matte clear coat has a microscopically rough surface, air stays under the decal and the marking turns gray, so-called silvering. A glossy base prevents that; a matte effect is added with the final coat.
