About product

Fiat A112 Abarth, Franco Cunico, San Remo 1979, 1:24 decals (Studio27)

A Studio27 decal sheet in 1:24 scale for the A112 Abarth kit from Fujimi. We give notice in advance, so that no mistake arises: this is not a kit, but a decal sheet alone. You have to own the model of the car already, as the decals are applied to a finished, painted and coated body. The sheet carries the markings of the car of Franco Cunico from San Remo 1979.

The real subject, and why this sheet is exceptional

The Autobianchi / Fiat A112 Abarth was a small and light hatchback that cost little when new. That is exactly why it became a rally legend: it was not a car for works stars, but a car that young drivers without money could reach. There was even a one-make cup of its own just for the A112 Abarth, and anyone who caught the eye in it had a chance to move on.

And that is precisely the story of Franco Cunico. The Italian driver from around Vicenza was among the winners of the A112 Abarth cup, and from there the road led upward: later he became Italian rally champion (three titles in the middle of the 1990s with the Ford Escort Cosworth) and in 1993 he won San Remo as a world championship event, as a private driver, which is a feat that has not been repeated since.

That arc is the whole point of this model: the car on which those who later won got their start. The same driver, the same rally, only fourteen years and one career further on.

San Remo is meanwhile a legendary Italian asphalt rally: mountain hairpins above the Ligurian coast, technical, narrow and merciless. It is run on closed public roads and the co-driver reads the pace notes to the driver, as the car goes practically blind into a corner the driver cannot yet see.

Tips for applying the decals

The base has to be glossy. On matte clear coat a decal silvers, as a white veil appears around the edges and the impression is gone. On the curved areas of the body use decal softener, so that the marking settles into the shape and does not crumple. Next comes clear coat, which seals the edges, and only then the patina. Anyone who swaps the order will smear the weathering under the coat.

And weathering is called for: a rally car is not meant to be polished. Dust on the sides, mud in the wheel arches, stone chipping behind the fenders, as only that turns a model into a race car.

Who the sheet is for

  • Modelers with the Fujimi A112 Abarth kit who want a particular name and a particular story.
  • Fans of Italian rallying and of San Remo.
  • Collectors who like to build the start of a career next to the later winning cars.
  • Those who want to practice weathering, as on a small body every effect shows up nicely.

The package contains a decal sheet only. The model, paints, clear coats, decal softener and weathering products are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a decal sheet only. The A112 Abarth kit from Fujimi has to be your own; the decals are just markings for a finished body.

An Italian rally driver who made his name in the cup for A112 Abarth cars and later became Italian rally champion. In 1993 he won San Remo as a world championship event, as a private driver with a Ford Escort Cosworth.

It is a legendary Italian asphalt rally run along mountain hairpins above the Ligurian coast, technical, narrow and very demanding in terms of precision.

Gloss clear coat, then the decals (with softener on the curves), then clear coat, then weathering. The order is the key: a patina applied before the clear coat will smear during coating.
