About product

Fiat A112 Abarth, No. 208, San Remo 1983, 1:24 decals (Studio27)

A Studio27 decal sheet in 1:24 scale for the A112 Abarth kit from Fujimi. Let us say it right at the start: this is not a kit. You are buying a decal sheet, that is markings, and you have to own the model of the car or get it separately. The sheet gives a model the markings of the car with race number 208 from San Remo 1983.

The real subject

The high race number speaks for itself: the A112 Abarth was not racing for overall victory. And that is exactly why it is interesting. This small and light hatchback, which cost little when new, was in Italian rallying what a first guitar is elsewhere, the car people started on. Anyone who could not afford a works special bought an A112, stuck the numbers on and drove. There was even a one-make cup of its own for these cars, in which young drivers met only each other, and out of it came a series of names that later won championship titles.

San Remo is a legendary Italian asphalt rally: narrow mountain hairpins above the Ligurian coast, where it is not about brute force but about precision. Like every rally it is run on closed public roads and the co-driver reads the pace notes to the driver, as the driver enters a corner he cannot even see yet at full speed and relies on the voice beside him. On a packed entry list with a number above two hundred it is the sport in its purest, least showy form.

Tips for applying the decals

Under decals belongs gloss clear coat, always. A matte surface is grainy, air stays under the decal and the typical silvering appears around the edges, which can no longer be put right afterwards. The body of the A112 has plenty of edges and curves, so reach for decal softener: the marking becomes supple and settles exactly where it should. Once everything is dry comes clear coat, and only at the very end weathering. This order is not a recommendation but a necessity.

Feel free to overdo the patina before it does any harm: a rally car is not meant to look as if it came from a car showroom. Dusty sides, mud in the wheel arches and stone chipping on the fenders give a model the life that clean glossy paint will never give it.

Who the sheet is for

  • Owners of the Fujimi A112 Abarth kit looking for less familiar markings.
  • Fans of San Remo and of the Italian rally scene of the 1980s.
  • Modelers who enjoy weathering, as a small car will carry plenty of dust and mud.
  • Collectors building a series of A112 Abarths in several racing forms side by side.

The package contains a decal sheet only. The model, paints, clear coat, decal softener and weathering products are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It does not. This is strictly a decal sheet. The A112 Abarth kit from Fujimi has to be your own, as the decals are applied only to a finished, painted and coated body.

It is a white veil around the edges of a decal which forms when air gets under the film, typically when applying it to matte clear coat. So apply them over a glossy base and leave any matte coat to the end of the build.

It softens the film of the decal, which is drawn to the shape of the body and does not crumple on curves, edges or engraved lines. With the rounded body of the A112 it pays off.

Because that is how a real racing car looks after the stages: dust, mud and stone chipping on the fenders. The weathering, though, is applied only after the decals have been sealed with clear coat.
