Be careful about what you are buying: this is not a kit, but a sheet of water-slide decals in 1:24 scale from the Japanese maker Studio27. It lets you turn an ordinary model of the McLaren MP4-12C into a police car of the Dubai police. The sheet is intended for the Fujimi kit; you will find neither the model of the car nor paints and clear coats in the package and they have to be bought separately.
The MP4-12C was the first road McLaren after the legendary F1, the car with which the brand returned to building sports cars for the road and set up a modern range of its own. It is all the stranger that one such car wears police colors: the Dubai police has the most expensive police fleet in the world, where, besides the McLaren, a Bugatti Veyron, Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Bentley, Mercedes SLS AMG, Nissan GT-R and Audi R8 really do serve. This is not a joke, these are genuine service vehicles. Officially they are not meant for chases, as they serve above all as PR, prestige and a tourist attraction: they stand in busy places and visitors take photographs beside them. The livery is shared by the whole fleet: a white body with a green stripe in the colors of the Dubai police, complemented by lettering in Arabic and English. The McLaren was given this green and white treatment in 2013.
The whole project stands and falls with the base: the body has to be white, because the sheet is designed for a white car and the green stripe and the lettering need a white base. White, though, sprays worse than other colors, as without a primer and without patient application of thin layers it will be patchy and show through. The decals are then applied to gloss clear coat, never to a matte one: on a matte surface air is held under the film and the decal silvers, the most common mistake on marked bodies. On the curved areas of the MP4-12C and on the long stripes running across the whole side use decal softener, so that the film is drawn even into the edges and recesses. The finale is taken care of by clear coat and polishing: real service cars are polished and on a police model a deep, wet gloss is the main thing that makes an impression.
