About product

Studio27 1:24 decal sheet, Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 No. 12, Safari Rally 1990 (for Hasegawa)

This is a decal sheet in 1:24 scale from the Japanese maker Studio27 with the markings of the Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 car with race number 12 from the Safari Rally 1990. The sheet is intended for the Hasegawa kit in 1:24 scale. Careful: this is NOT a kit. You are not buying a model of the car, but only the markings for it. The Galant VR-4 kit itself has to be obtained separately.

The real subject: the hardest rally there ever was

The Galant VR-4 is the direct predecessor of the legendary Lancer Evo, with a turbo engine, all-wheel drive and the works Mitsubishi team. And the Safari Rally was an event it was built for like few others. The Safari was run across the African bush, thousands of kilometers, several days at a stretch. These were not closed stages as we know them today, as game and people walked along the roads, dust hid the view and the cars flew over the waves on dirt roads at full speed. The cars therefore had a raised chassis, massive underbody protection and kangaroo bars, roof lights, and they were accompanied over the route by aircraft to report danger to the crews and guide the service. Reaching the finish was a victory in itself, and often only a handful of crews from the whole entry managed it. Car No. 12 of the 1990 running was driven by Kenjiro Shinozuka with his co-driver John Meadows.

Tips for applying the decals and for weathering

First the technique: decals belong only on gloss clear coat. On a matte surface the edges of the film turn silver and the model is irretrievably spoiled. On curved areas and edges use decal softener. Then comes clear coat over the decals, and only after that weathering. This order cannot be got around. And weathering is precisely the main discipline with a Safari car: an African car is not meant to be clean, it is meant to be wrecked. Baked red dust in every gap, around the lights, in the radiator grille and under the fender lips. Dried mud and chips of stone on the sills and behind the wheels. A dusty windshield with cleaned semicircles left by the wipers, a detail everyone notices. And scuffed, chipped paint on the edges of the hood and the sills. That is what turns a rally model into a living thing.

Who the sheet is for

  • Modelers building the Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 1:24 from Hasegawa.
  • Fans of the African era of rallying and of the legendary Safari.
  • Lovers of Mitsubishi and of the predecessors of the Lancer Evo.
  • Modelers who want to have a proper go at dust and mud weathering.

The product contains decals only. The model, paints, clear coats, pigments and washes are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is a decal sheet only. The Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 model in 1:24 scale from Hasegawa has to be bought separately.

Paint, gloss clear coat, the decals with softener, clear coat again and weathering at the very end. Anyone who dirties the model before fixing the decals will destroy them.

Work red pigments and washes into every gap and fender lip, add dried mud to the sills, scuffed paint on the edges and a dusty windshield with clean semicircles left by the wipers.

They were applied to a matte base. Air stayed under the film. Always apply them to gloss clear coat.
