This product is a decal sheet in 1:24 scale from the maker Studio27 with the markings of the Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 car with race number 1 from the Rally Ivory Coast 1992. It is intended for the Hasegawa kit in the same scale. Emphatically again: you are not buying a kit, but only decals. There are no plastic parts in the package, as the Galant VR-4 model itself has to be obtained separately.
The Galant VR-4 was the car with which Mitsubishi entered the top rally category: a turbo engine, all-wheel drive and robust construction. It is the direct predecessor of the legendary Lancer Evo. The Rally Ivory Coast was the second great African event of the same stamp as the Safari, extremely long, run across open country, with routes that literally destroyed a car. The winner was the one who got to the finish; failures and wear decided more than pure speed. Race number 1 means a car entered as the main hope of the team, and in 1992 it was driven by Kenjiro Shinozuka with his co-driver John Meadows, and he won the event. Shinozuka was the very first Japanese driver who managed to win in the World Rally Championship, and the African marathons were his domain.
The technical basis first: decals always on gloss clear coat. A matte surface is their enemy, as air is trapped under the film and the edges give themselves away with the typical silvering. On curved areas and the edges of the body use decal softener. Then follows clear coat, and only then weathering, never the other way round, otherwise you will dissolve or scuff the decals. After several days in the terrain a winning African car is not meant to be clean, it is meant to look beaten up: red dust baked into the gaps of the hood, the doors and the trunk lid, a thick layer of mud and chips of stone on the fenders and sills, a dusty windshield with cleaned semicircles left by the wipers and chipped paint on the edges. It is precisely this contrast, the glory of a winning livery under a layer of African soil, that turns a model into a real story.
