About product

Lola Aston Martin – ALMS 2011, 1:24, Studio27 (Multimedia Kit)

Yes, it is a kit – but not a plastic one. Studio27 supplies it as a Multimedia Kit: a combination of resin, white metal, photo-etched brass sheet, rubber tires and decals. The body is cast in resin, the small and highly loaded parts tend to be metal, the thin elements photo-etched. This box is the version for the ALMS, the American Le Mans Series, the American endurance series. Do not mix it up with the sister kit of the same car in the Le Mans 2011, car No. 22 finish – a different race, a different livery, different decals.

The real subject

The Lola-Aston Martin is an LMP1 class prototype with a closed cockpit. The chassis comes from the British design firm Lola, while the brand and the naturally aspirated V12 were supplied by Aston Martin – so this is a marriage of two British names, not a production sports car. Aston Martin is one of the icons of Le Mans: it took an outright win there in 1959. In 2011 this prototype also appeared in the ALMS, the American counterpart of the European endurance championship, where LMP1 cars raced against each other and against GT cars.

Building and painting tips

The most important advice to start with: wash the parts BEFORE painting. Mold release agent stays on resin castings – if you do not remove it with warm water, detergent and a brush, the paint will not grip and will peel once dry. It is the most common reason a resin model fails. It also holds that plastic cement does not glue resin; you need cyanoacrylate glue. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, not with nippers – nippers will snap the casting. The parts have no plastic pins and sockets, so dry fit, sand and fit them together. Resin dust is harmful to health – sand wet and with a respirator. Apply filler primer before the paint and bend the photo-etched parts with a bender.

Who the model is for

  • Experienced modelers who have already built from resin and metal
  • Collectors of LMP1 endurance prototypes
  • Fans of the Aston Martin brand and of the American ALMS series
  • Those who want a car that practically nobody makes in plastic – a short run, sought after by collectors

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a kit – but not a plastic one. It is a multimedia kit made of resin, white metal and photo-etched sheet. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted and is intended for experienced modelers.

It is the same car but from two different races. This box is the American ALMS series; the sister kit represents car No. 22 from the 24 Hours of Le Mans and has a different livery and different decals.

No. Plastic cement melts polystyrene and does not work on resin. Use cyanoacrylate glue, ideally with an activator, and fit the joints by sanding beforehand.

Almost always because of the mold release agent that stays on the castings. Before painting, wash the parts in warm water with detergent and a brush, let them dry through and use a primer.
