About product

McLaren MP4/4 – the cockpit of car No. 12 (Ayrton Senna), 1:20, Studio27

Careful, this is neither a model nor a kit. It is a detail set of cockpit parts from Studio27 that replaces and supplements plastic parts in the basic Tamiya McLaren MP4/4 kit in 1:20 scale – which you have to own separately. Without it you will not be able to use the set.

Number 12 means Senna – and that is the whole point of this set

In the 1988 season Ayrton Senna drove car number 12 and Alain Prost car number 11. You are therefore not buying just any cockpit – you are buying Ayrton Senna's cockpit, the cockpit of the man who took his first world championship title that year. If you are building Prost's car, you need the set for car No. 11 instead – Studio27 makes it separately under the name Cockpit Set No.11. Mixing them up means building the wrong driver, so please check before ordering.

The real subject

The McLaren MP4/4 is the most dominant car Formula 1 has ever seen: in 1988 it won fifteen races out of sixteen. Senna took eight of them, Prost seven. Two of the finest drivers of all time sat in the same team, in the same car – and their duel grew into the most famous rivalry in the history of sport. The car was powered by a turbocharged 1.5 liter Honda V6, dressed in what is today an iconic red and white livery.

Why it is worth reworking the cockpit

A Formula 1 car is completely exposed – there is no bodywork to hide mistakes. You can see into an open cockpit, and molded plastic simply is not enough there: the seat belts are only a suggested engraving, the buckles have no shape, the instrument panel has no depth. Photo-etched sheet is as thin as real sheet metal in scale and belts with buckles finally look like belts with buckles. That is the difference that decides things at an exhibition.

Usage tips and who the set is for

  • Photo-etched sheet has to be bent – get an etch bender, or make do with a razor blade and tweezers.
  • It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, not with plastic cement.
  • Reckon with the fact that the original plastic detail will have to be sanded away – this step is irreversible.
  • The set is for more experienced modelers: it calls for tweezers, a magnifier and patience.
  • Ideal for fans of Ayrton Senna and collectors of the turbo era.

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is not a complete model – the basic kit, the glue, the paints and the tools are not included in the package.
