About product

A Studio27 brake set for the Lotus Type 99T in 1:20 scale

This is not a model and it is not a kit. It is a set of additional parts that replaces the brakes in an already existing Tamiya kit — the basic kit therefore has to be obtained separately, as the set on its own builds nothing. It is made by the Japanese company Studio27, which specializes in detail additions of this kind for Formula 1 models.

Why the brakes in particular

On a Formula 1 car the brake discs and calipers are right there in plain sight — they sit behind the wheels, without any covers, and you can see into them on a finished model. Injection-molded plastic has its limits, though: a molded disc looks like a flat pancake, because a mold cannot produce a truly thin edge or a genuinely drilled, ventilated disc. A photo-etched or metal part, by contrast, looks like a brake — it has a thickness matching the scale and sharp edges. That is the whole point of this product, and it is exactly what shows on a display table.

The real subject

The Lotus 99T of 1987 is one of the most iconic Lotus cars of all. It was driven by Ayrton Senna, who won the Monaco Grand Prix and the Detroit Grand Prix with it — and Detroit remained the last victory of the Lotus team in Formula 1. The car was moreover technically pioneering: it had active, computer-controlled suspension, one of the first truly workable applications of that technology in Formula 1. The chassis was able to hold the car level even over bumps, it spared the tires and it allowed running with less downforce.

Practical notes — honestly

  • It is an addition for more experienced modelers — it calls for tweezers, a magnifier and patience.
  • Photo-etched parts have to be bent; an etch bender comes in handy.
  • They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue, not with plastic cement — that does not hold on metal.
  • The original plastic detail often has to be sanded away. This step is irreversible, so reckon with it in advance.
  • Studio27 also makes a photo-etched set for the Lotus 99T for the same car — the two can be used together and it adds the interior, the grilles and the belts.

This is an additional set of parts, not a model. The basic Tamiya kit, the glue, the paints and the tools are not included in the package.

FAQ

Neither. It is a set of additional parts that improves the brakes on a model. You have to have the basic Tamiya kit of the Lotus 99T or buy it separately — you will not build a model out of this set alone.

Because on a Formula 1 car the brakes are not covered by anything. Injection-molded plastic cannot do a thin edge or a ventilated disc, so the original part looks like a solid pancake. A detail set gives the discs and the calipers a thickness and a sharpness matching the scale.

Cyanoacrylate glue — plastic cement does not hold on metal or photo-etched parts. Then tweezers, a sharp knife and ideally a magnifier. An etch bender comes in handy for bending photo-etched parts. Reckon also with the original plastic detail often having to be sanded away, which is an irreversible step.

Ayrton Senna. In 1987 he won the Monaco Grand Prix and the Detroit Grand Prix with it — and the win in Detroit remained the last triumph of the Lotus stable in Formula 1. The car also had active, computer-controlled suspension.
